Research Methods - Coursework ExampleThe value of the statistic is too small and the probability is too high to turn away the null hypothesis. Thus, from the F-test we conclude that all coefficients could be jointly equal to zero. (ii) H0?2=0 against H0?2?0 using a significance take aim of 0.05 Since the ersatz hypothesis is that of non-equality but no direction (greater or less than) is specified, the test will be two tailed. The computed t- statistic is equal to -2.66937 which is greater in terms of domineering value than the two-tailed 5% critical value of 2.018 ( given up the number of observations and variables, the degrees of freedom are 42), we reject the null hypothesis that the coefficient of 1990 GDP per-capita is not statistically significantly divers(prenominal) from zero. (iii) H0?3=0 against H0?30 using a significance level of 0.05 Since here the election hypothesis is of the greater than type, the test will be right tailed. For the given number of observations an d variables, the critical one sided 5% t value is 1.682. Our computed t-value is 2.598522 which is greater than the critical value. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected at 5% level of confidence. This implies that we need statistical evidence of secondary enrollment having a positive impact on GDP addition. (iv) H0?7=0 against H0?70 using a significance level of 0.1 Again, the alternative is of the greater than type, implying a right tailed test. The critical 1% t-value is 2.418. From the table above, we find that the computed t-statistic is 1.50471. Since this is smaller than the critical value, we extend to reject the null hypothesis. Therefore, we fail to find any evidence that credit ratio has any statistically significant impact on GDP growth. Therefore, we find a contradiction among our conclusions in (i) and (ii). While in (i) we fail to reject the notion that all the coefficients on the predictor variables are jointly zero, we reject the hypothesis that the coeffic ient on the introductory explanatory variable, the 1990 percapita GDP is zero. But if this is true then (i) should have rejected the null in favour of the alternative which requires atleast one of the coefficients to be non-zero. Typically, such contradictions farm because of the violation of one or more of the basic assumptions underlying OLS estimation. Particularly, if on that point are outliers that distort the estimates, then such contradictory results can emerge. 3. Advice for choosing between alternative spending From the fitted model in the previous part we have found that secondary enrolment has a positive impact on GDP growth as does the private credit ratio. Infact the coefficients are quite close though that of private credit ratio is slightly lower. However, only the former is statistically significant. This implies that there is no evidence of increases in private credit ratio having any impacts on the GDP growth. Therefore I would recommend investing the sum of co in on policy measures that will increase the countrys rate of enrolment in secondary education. 4. Diagnostics for evaluating the validity

Ecotourism - Essay Exampleuld be considered as culturally signifi endt for the local people, it becomes necessary to take care that tourism does not in any way hurt the well being of such communities. Infact one way of improving the well being of the local communities would be to provide them with institutionalise financial benefits to help them conserve the milieu or purchasing goods and services directly from them and empowering them. As can be seen from the above discussion, the main difference, as Beeton (1998) points out, betwixt other types of tourism and eco-tourism is that eco-tourism is more involved in conserving the ecological aspect of the environment there is greater attention given to the ethical aspect of preserving the environment and improving the well being of the local communities involved. Ecotourism activities can include a whole range of activities from photography, wild life viewing, bird watching, mountaineering and even skiing. These activities can come un der different categories of tourism but they become ecotourism activities solely when people become aware of the ethical responsibility they have in preserving and conserving the environment. It is therefore not hard to imagine why ecotourism is given precedence in the study of sociology. Sociology, put simply, is the study of the society. It provides deep insight about the social demeanor and activities of humans within a society. Buckley (2004), states that the study of social norms is an inherent part of the discipline of sociology and social norms especially pertinent to outdoor creation, have drawn healthy attention in the past few years. Therefore, ecotourism in sociological terms simply seeks to define social norms which are used in evaluating outdoor conduct and environmental conditions. The growth of... EcotourismEncouraging ecotourism in developing countries would firstly and fore mostly help the economy diversify. As a result of promoting ecotourism, more businesses t estament spring up and further business expansion in different fields would help spread the risk over a range of various economic activities. This is most important relevant to those developing countries who are highly dependent on a single sector in their economy (oil issue or agricultural production). The diversification go forth alike help bring in monetary benefits for the local economy. By bringing people into the area, new bullion will be injected into the economy. The most important strategy for a sustained ecotourism approach is to increase the participation and involvement of the local people. The whole essence of ecotourism lies in its ability to improve the well being of the local community. The new money circulating in the economy can be used in a variety of forms. It can be used on public expenditure and can be spent on building infrastructure for the country. It can also take the form of greater employment opportunities, and increased production which will attempt to increase the GDP of the country. Production induced phenomenon will work when businesses will buy goods and services from other business and consumption induced phenomenon will work when the final consumers would buy goods and services. However, the promotion of ecotourism must be done with precaution because it can also put an additional burden on the financial and economic resources of the country.

Quantitve and qualitative method of research, sociology Essay

Quantitve and qualitative method of research, sociology - Essay ExampleResearch methodological analysis is the procedural framework within which the research is conducted. The methodology would depend upon the topic to be researched and the specific research questions are the primary drivers. Positivism (quantitative with hypothesis testing) and interpretivism (qualitative with hypothesis generalizations) are the different types of research philosophies, each has its suffer purposes and advantages.Research philosophy highlights two different schools of thought on the how to conduct research. Arguments should be evaluated in different ways because primarily arguments have different roles and purposes and pack assess according to the purpose in their mind. At times arguments provide useful information depending on ones knowledge of how the world works. In a different setting, one behind take an abstract approach and ask what follows from a given set of information and then decide on the outcome. Arguments can be evaluated in two qualitatively different ways in terms of their deductive correctness or in terms of inductive strength (Rips, 2001).Quantitative methodology is a positivist approach in sociology research. Positivism is characterized by operational definitions, objectivity, replicability and causality (Bryman, 1984). Through questionnaire items the concepts can be operationalized objectivity can be obtained by maintaining distance between the observer and the observed. By applying the same research instrument in another context replication can be maintained and causality is handled through path analysis and related regression techniques. Quantitative investigations look for distinguishing characteristics, elemental properties and empirical boundaries and tend to measure how practically or how often (Nau, 1995 cited by Amaratunga et al.,). Quantitative research designs determine the truth value of propositions and allow flexibility in the

Photography Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Photography - Essay ExamplePublic disclo real of orphic facts would be another basis for a tort involving photography. For instance, if one takes a picture of another at an AIDS clinic, and it is clear that this picture was taken at an AIDS clinic, and this picture was published, then this would be public disclosure of private facts, and it would be actionable. Publicity that places another in a false light is another hindrance. Perhaps an example of this would be to photograph a teetotaler with a beverage that resembles a beer, when it is actually a non-alcoholic beer. The fourth major restriction is that one cannot take anothers likeness or name to single-valued function for ones own advantage (Krages, 2007). An example of this might be taking a picture of nighbody, then putting this picture up on ones own website and use it, without permission, to advertise ones business. While the right to photograph others in public is pretty straightforward, in that, with some restrictions, there is generally a right to photograph individuals in public, it is different in private places. This might include residences, museums, concerts, etc. The owner of the venue or the residence has a right to restrict photography within the residence or venue. Generally they post signs stating this fact, but, even if they do not, they have the right to verbally prohibit photographers from taking photographs (Manning, 2012). In general, I think that photography laws are just right. I believe that anyone has the right to photograph anybody on the street, yet I also see the need for the restrictions. If an individual is suffering from AIDS and does not want this known, then he or she has the right to nonplus sure that his or her picture at the clinic is not publicized. This is a basic privacy right to keep ones illness hidden, and it is perfectly acceptable to make sure that this privacy right is not abridged. Likewise, it is a clear invasion of privacy to take pictures with long-ran ge lenses, so this is another excellent restriction. The false light restriction also goes a long way to protecting privacy and protecting others from defamation. In other words, I feel that the restrictions upon photographing individuals provide an excellent balance between the first amendment rights of photographers with the privacy rights of individuals. As for restrictions in private residences and venues, I wish that these restrictions would be lessened, although I understand that private places have a right to make these restrictions. Discussion 3 According to Mendelson (2007), paparazzi are denigrated by journalists, who do not consider what he paparazzi do to be in line with journalisms ethics. This is because they are intrusive and often harass their celebrity prey. Not only that, their focus is often on the trivial, as opposed to the focus of a salutary journalist. Alach (2008) takes issue with the fact that the paparazzi invade the celebritys privacy. He also decries the ir tactics, stating that paparazzi often scare the children of celebrities, and that they often hunt in packs, with hordes of photographers, who have been tipped onward about a certain celebritys whereabouts, ambushing the hapless celebrity and the family of the celebrity. Alach (2008) finds paparazzi to be exploitive, therefore their First Amendment rights

A Rose for Emily Essay Example for Free

A blush for Emily Essayadumbration is an advance sign or warning of what is to come in the future. Foreshadowing is used as a literary device to tease proofreaders about plot turns that will occur later in the story. In the story, A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner, several examples are used to achieve the surprising but believable ending. The extremely strong scent about Ms. Emilys house and the corrupt of the poison are just what of these examples of foreshadowing in this story. The first example of foreshadowing is the horrible reek that the townspeople complain about. In the quote, just as if a man any man- could keep a kitchen properly, it shows how the women accuse the male servant of the smell because they stereotype how bad men are in the kitchen since it isnt their place. Anthor accusation of the smell from the butler is Judge Steven when he states its probably just a snake or rat that nigger of hers killed in the yard. These two quotes notify the smell to be f rom the butler but kept us on the edge of what the smell really was. The townspeople tried to resolve the issue, as both(prenominal) of the men decided to sprinkle lime around her house in hopes it would alleviate the stench. However, the smell did not dissipate for another week or two. If the perfume had come from a mere snake or rat, the smell would have persisted for only a few days. In anthor section of the story Emily plans on purchase arsenic. This is the next example of foreshadowing. I want the best you have. I dont care what kind, this quote made by Emily to the town druggist when she wants the strongest poison. This questions the reader what she might need it for and why the strongest one. The druggist answers back to her, theyll kill anything up to an elephant, the druggist made this point to let Miss Emily know that it kills huge animals not only just rats. When Emily goes home she finds written on the box, under the skull and cross bones- for rats, this suggest to th e reader to think whether she might use it on herself or for soulfulness else. Therefore in the ending of the story, when Miss Emily dies and the townspeople discover the corpse of Homer Barron, the reader recalls the use of foreshadowing, Miss Emily buying the poison and the horrible stench that was coming from the house. Faulkner in fact prepares the reader for Homer Barrons death at the hands of Miss Emily almost from the very beginning. The use of foreshadowing end-to-end the story contributes to the unity of the story and allows the reader to acceptthe lovers fate as inevitable.

Daimlerchrysler Merger the Quest to Create “One Company” Essay Example for Free

Daimlerchrysler Merger the Quest to Create One Company EssayIn pitch to understand and be critical on Daimlers survival of match, apart from the motives presented in the case, one also needs to consider the enterprise environment issues during the time. 90s was a wave of mergers and acquisitions characterized by Cross-border ventures (Lipton M. , 2006). According to Lipton it was an era where size mattered and mergers were considered the one-way to internationalization and market expansion. Furthermore, nine of the ten largest deals in history solely took place in the three-year period 1998-2000. Having established that, one can understand that Daimler was under market and investor pressure to go large. In such an environment, a European phoner would think of an integrative expansion to the vast US market as the best strategy (Japanese market too cultural different). So, from the choices of either first appearance a bare-assed subsidiary (high risk) or seeking for a JV, o r an acquisition or a merger Daimler went for the merger. It was an effort to meet the environmental trend by increasing market share and to make a big impact to the larger competitors.Comparing the three great American car companies, GM was too large (in 1997 GM had $178b revenues compared to Daimlers $71b) and difficult to control, Ford had investor issues (Ford family), but Chrysler, a similar size company, would seem the best partner. Chrysler was also ideal partner for Daimler because it had a good knowledge of the local market, which lowers the venture risk (bartlett pear Beamish, 2011), and it would offer RD synergies and broaden the offered product range (Glavin W. F. , 2004). Considering all those factors I believe that Chrysler was the best choice of a partner. However, during those early stages of cross-cultural mergers and acquisitions there was little experience on making the venture work. In the appendix, I raise the main friction points and psychoanalyse how they sho uld have been treated according to the literature. From this digest we can see that the companies where different in all regards. In fact, seeing the range of daily activities and structure it is bare that the two companies operated in completely opposite. Thus, it was truly a marriage of opposites. But still this is not a strong argument for consolidation efforts failure.According to Bartlett Beamish persistence and willingness to evolve and adapt are the key to success in all collaborations. By looking through the friction points and what the literature suggests I tried to point who the person in charge of each process should in fact be. The company in Bold in appendix is the company that should lead the efforts in that process after the merger due to its expertise which consequently would benefit the whole. It is evident that either Chrysler or both companies should manage the new company. In reality Chrysler tried to pass this through to Daimler but simply the management fai led to penetrate the strong conservative culture of Daimler in the beginning and then it lacked the persistency. Then, Daimler took advantage of that weakness and it saw this merger not as a marriage of equals but as a takeoer. So the great problem of the integration process was the combination of Chryslers inability to assert its processes and then Daimlers failure to evolve, adapt and view its ally. Question 2 In order to take back advice I consider Bartletts Beamishs framework on guidelines for a successful JV.First, there was a lack of proper pre-merger analysis which, had it been executed properly, would have raised early on the friction points. Secondly, there were no common objectives set and there was no plan on the chassis of action after the merger. The CIC and the PMI integration teams had no framework and dealt with issues as they arose, and thus were bound to fail. So, before embarking on a collaboration venture the CEOs should have theme of those steps. As we fou nd, the inability to adapt and the cultural differences had been the main source of problems.Trust is the main fuel of collaboration and it can only be developed over time, being a result of shared experiences (Bartlett Beamish, 2011). In our case the two extremes merged one day and they were simply expected to run like clockwork. An hamper has similar benefits with a merger (Bartlett Beamish, 2011) but addresses the core problems better for the following reasons. A main benefit of an alliance is that when it is formed it has an exit clause, which allows the two companies to comprise more relaxed, and it offers a vehicle to learning and experimentation for the necessary bonds and trust to be formed. This lays the best conditions for a hybrid culture to form. Also, the companies operations that offer the greatest potential to synergies can be integrated, whereas the extreme opposite ones can be left to operate independently. This means that sectors such as RD can be joint and Bran ding can operate independent. However, an alliance, alone, would not work for those companies as they wanted to go large. In my opinion, the best solution would be to form an alliance as a way to build on trust and learning and then as a second step, if both sides where mature, merge in common respect with clear objectives and structure.

Does Modern Technology Help Students Essay Example for Free

Does Modern Technology Help Students EssaySample Essay 2 Question Does modern engineering science help students learn more than learning and learn it more quickly? Answer Marvelous as it looks at first sight, modern technology does non help students learn information at greater speed and with higher efficiency in most cases. On the contrary, it works towards the opposite direction which guide students to lose their initiative to learn and explore. First of all, one property of modern technology is latently harmful to any learning mind it distracts. One thing we step about when we are searching for information online is that the internet, as an outstanding example of modern technology, provides us with not only relevant results to make use of, nevertheless also external links to click. More than once I turned on my computer to check school library for resources, but ended up watching Youtube videos. In this case, computer as a representative of modern technology plays a ne gative role in learning information. We do determine more information with the convenient tool, yet most of them are irrelevant and in the end procrastinating would lower our learning. Also, students would easily become disoriented in the immense sea of information. Although modern technology could equip us with easy access to information, the huge amount of resources would actually leave us confused. Therefore, it is only we obtain information more quickly rather than we learn it more quickly.A telling example is my experience with a digital library which stores almost all the books I need. At first I enjoyed downloading them from the database, however, one month later I ended up with hundreds of books stored in my laptop yet none of them finished or ever clicked. Furthermore, modern technology gives students an illusion that information and real knowledge is easy to learn just by clicking mouse or watching videos. barely in fact this is only the first step towards useful informa tion and effective learning, as learning of any kind requires full concentration and synergetic thinking, which are almost absent in the process of popular e-learning experience. To summarize, modern technology does not help students learn more information and learn it more quickly, though it does make access to information and resources much more easily. The popular e-learning still lacks the concentration, depth, and interaction that are the hallmark of traditional ways of education and learning.

Population Changes in Japan

Population salmagundis in japanMustafa AmeenIntroductionPopulation in a country is a source of vitality, and it is convolute in a variety of costs to maintain a reasonable standard of living. Particularly for resource-poor Island nation like Japan, which has a race of very handsome or excessively small is a serious problem. Size is not the entirely issue structure of the tribe is excessively an important factor. For example, it can be severe imbalances between the sexes threaten the st skill of marri old age and the family in society monogamous. If the number of senior citizens is large comp atomic number 18d with the working-age population, the latter bears a heavy burden to support, and by chance the collapse of the pension system. Issues much(prenominal) as these cannot be ignored by anyone who wishes to understand the political choices and affable problems facing Japan or to consider the prospects for the countrys in store(predicate) in the near term. This case study looks at the country with a declining and aging population. Japan has a population of about 127 one thousand million people, the tenth largest in the world, but it is unusual because the population is decreasing. Only a small number of other countries (such as Italy, Ger more and Russia) have miserable population, but none is expected to follow as fast as the population of Japan. The mortality rates also declined dramatically, and the result was that the average length of life has increased by about 30 years over the past half-century. Average life expectancy is now 82 for women and 76 for men. The percentage of people aged 65 years or much than 14% of the population in 1994, and by 2020 is expected to be the number one in the world through this procedure Japan.Japan has close to 27 million people, the elderly and the largest proportion of over- 65S from any country (21 %, see Figure 1). It also has a smaller proportion of the population under the age of 15 (13.6 %), which all ow lead to great difficulties for Japan in the future, as the number of employees will not be able to support the population. These changes occur much quickly in Japan than in Europe or the United States, and can seriously affect the economy of one of the richest countries in the world.Rate of Change of population in JapanUntil recently, in the 1950s, and Japan is facing a chronic problem too many mouths to feed. In the Edo period (1600-1868) held by the population and the media as a desperate infanticide and abandonment of the elderly.Japans population grew rapidly as it industrialized in the early twentieth century, an increase from 60 million in 1926 up to 100 million in 1967. Since the 1980s, however, has slowed population growth, afterwards peaking in 2005, is now in decline. It is estimated that the population will fall to 121 million by 2025 and 100 million by 2050. What is more alarming is that the proportion of older persons will increase, and by 2030 it is estimated that one person in three will be over 65. This puts great pressure on the country. The course was a contraceptive on the main key for the decline in fertility. And practiced widely in Japan birth control condom use on a large scale private. And the availability of abortions also undoubtedly helped unwanted pregnancy reduction. abortion was legalized in Japan in 1948. The law allows for the termination of pregnancy is when persistence poses a serious threat to the physical wellness of the mothers or for economic reasons. prolonged explanation of these causes physical or economic condition is the basis for most abortions. The changing demographics in the population profits are shown in Figure 1. Pyramid for 1950 is cone-shaped, with a wide base. However, as the decreased birth and death rates, has changed the form of a large pyramid and will continue to do so. In the pyramid for 2005 is replaced by a broad base of essential part before the bulging in 2050, there is the upper part of a m uch larger, which indicates the predominance of the ability of the elderly. Vigorous pace of change in demographics cannot be reversed or even slowed down significantly. Avoid economic stagnation and social and maintain inter-generational right may be the biggest challenges facing Japan, which grow gray by the year.Figure 1 Japans changing population3Declining of the population in JapanThe main reason for the decline in numbers is that Japanese women are not having enough children. Many Japanese who choose to marry at a later age than in April 2007, on average, between 28 and 30 years old, and this means that they have children later, or not at all. Many women finalise to also not to marry, choose to study or pursue a career instead of having children.Japanese culture in the upbringing of children and usually remaining for the mothers. Very few men take any leave to care for children ( although they are entitled to do so ) , and opinion polls reveal that more than 40 % of parents did not change a nappy or put children to sleep. This fact , and the lack of child-care facilities , which means that the small number of women returning to work after having children , and many women feel and others will have to give up a lot in order to have a family .There are also strong economic reasons why people choose not to have children or to have one or two only. Being pregnant is expensive in Japan, and pregnancy is not covered by health insurance. This means that women should pay for their own medical care during pregnancy, including hospital tests. After birth, and is provided free health care for all children up to the age of three years (or five in some areas). He added that this is the huge costs of education and higher education, and many families decide they can only afford to have one or two children at most. Child Benefit paid by the government to the families of low and barely enough to pay for diapers , not to mention other costs associated with having a fami ly .The effect of population declination in JapanThere are two types of special problems that will result from population decline. The first is the cost of caring for people as they get older, and the second is the lack of younger workers to get hold of the jobs. And more and more people r individually loneliness age, the country will need to find more money for their pensions. This means that already raising the retirement age and gets more contributions from both employers and employees, and theyll have to revisit again in the future. Already there is evidence of older workers in the shops, at airports, in the capital of Japan subway or taxi driving. In the future there will be great pressure on the country as it tries to provide seemly health care to support the elderly. This inevitably means larger tax bills for people who work. The second problem and the most pressing is that companies find it difficult to hire new employees, and this will become more difficult in the future. If you cannot fill the jobs, then productivity will fall, and so the country will prosper.Box 1 World population over 65 JapanFigure 2 Map showing the worldwide distribution of people over 65 years old Figure 3 World map showing land areasThe map in Figure 2 is an equal area cartogram in which each country has been sized according to the percentage of its population that is over 65. The colors used group the territories into 12 geographical regions, and allow it to be compared with other maps in the World mapper series (see web link at end of article). Figure 3 is a standard world map based on land areas and using the same colors, for comparison. In 2002, 7% of the worlds population was over 65. The map shows Japan, in purple, with a large elderly population at 21%. This contrasts with Saudi Arabia, where only 1% of the population is over 65. China has the largest elderly population in terms of numbers (92 million), but this is only 7% of the total Chinese population. Africa is hom e to only 6% of the worlds population aged over 65.Conclusion and future workIn the long run, it is hoped that Japanese women can be persuaded to have more children, but social attitudes and trends is difficult for the government to address. Consideration is being given in the reforms, such as increasing the amount of the subsidy of the child, and the provision of tax allowances for families, and make child care more accessible, in the hope that this would lead to an increase in birth rates. However, many people do not think that an increase in birth rates that were not there are also social and cultural changes. In the short term, Japan should solve the labor shortage there. One way is clear to encourage more immigration. Currently there are only about 2 million foreigners live in Japan, and this is not anywhere near enough. There is a need for workers in the full image of functions, including dirty or dangerous jobs that Japanese people do not want to do ( such as cleaning or work ing in residential homes ) and functions that people need to be highly skilled and trained . Shortage in the engineering and computer programming Japan is well known. nigh estimates say that Japan will need at least 500,000 immigrants each year over the next 40 years in order to go pace.Difficulty with this, however, is that the Japanese as a nation are opposed to immigration. People born Japanese make up 98.5 % of the population, and it is difficult for foreigners to be original or to become citizens of Japan. In comparison with Switzerland this rate is 18% of the foreign workforce. Although the Japanese government is considering how to encourage more migrant workers, it also wants to impose controls on immigration. It would be difficult to change the views of the majority of the Japanese people, who fear that immigration threatens to what they see as the purity of Japanese culture. There is no doubt that Japans population in decline, and despite the fact that the government is aware of this problem, and many feel they have been slow to respond. It is unlikely that the elderly population is smaller and increasingly will be able to maintain the productivity and prosperity of the country, unless steps are taken to address the issues of population decline.Figure 3 current population pyramid for japan 5ReferencesWorld mapper www.sasi.group.shef.ac.uk/worldmapper/wikipedia.org/wiki/Aging of Japanhttp//www.ithaca.edu/gerontology/schools/pdf/Aging%20in%20Japan.pdfhttp//www.worldmapper.org/articles/WW_Japan_pop.pdfhttp//www.indexmundi.com/japan/age_structure.html1
